SERBIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY: DEATH OF AMBASSADOR POTEZICA PLACED AD ACTA

BELGRADE, 9 November 2017 (Beta) - An investigation into the death of Serbian Ambassador to Libya Oliver Potezica, who died in a car crash in Tunis, has been closed as there is no proof of a criminal nature to the case, the Serbian Foreign Ministry said on Nov. 9. The Foreign Ministry of Tunis notified the Serbian ministry that, based on the investigation which was conducted by the country's judicial authorities, the case had been placed archived. "The case of the death of Serbian Ambassador to Libya Oliver Potezica has been placed ad acta for lack of evidence of the criminal nature of his death," the ministry said in a note. Serbian Ambassador Oliver Potezica died in a hospital in Soussa, in May from wounds sustained in a traffic accident in Tunis, where he was on business.

VUCIC: TENSIONS NEED TO BE LOWERED IN RELATIONS BETWEEN SERBIA AND UKRAINE

BELGRADE, 9 November 2017 (Beta) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated on Nov. 9 that tensions should be lowered in relations between Serbia and Ukraine, and that he hoped there would not be a crisis. "I do not want to comment on anyone's statement. The relevant bodies are doing their work. The tensions need to be lowered," Vucic told reporters at the Belgrade Waterfront construction site. He said the Ukrainian people are friends of Serbia and that he would do everything for the two countries to have good relations. Ukraine called its ambassador back to Kiev for consultations at the start of November, and Serbia called its ambassador for consultations in Belgrade on Nov. 8. The foreign minister of Ukraine, Pavlo Klimkin, and the Ukrainian ambassador to Serbia, Oleksandr Alexandrovyc, had talks on Nov. 8 about relations with Serbia, especially about Serbian mercenaries who, in their opinion, are fighting for the Russian side in Donbas, the region in eastern Ukraine. Also, Ukraine expressed concern over Serbian representatives' illegal contacts with Crimea, and the hope that Serbia would be completely committed to the principle of honoring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic stated on Nov. 8 that he viewed the new developments with Ukraine as an attempt to pressure Serbia into distancing itself from Russia.

ERDOGAN IN LETTER TO VUCIC: SERBIA-TURKEY COOPERATION STRONGEST BASE FOR STABLE REGION

BELGRADE, 9 November 2017 (Beta) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wrote in a letter to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic that cooperation between Ankara and Belgrade would be the strongest foundation of the stability and well-being of the region, the office of the Serbian president said in a press release. Erdogan noted that peace and stability in the Balkans was of utmost importance for Turkey. He also said that a Turkey-Serbia-Bosnia and Herzegovina trilateral process was a useful mechanism and that the agreement reached during his visit to Serbia, about the start of preparations for the summit next year, was an important step for the entire region. Peace and stability of the Balkans are of the utmost importance for Turkey. In this regard, I highly appreciate Your Excellency's constructive approach. I am closely monitoring the courageous steps you are taking towards the countries in the region. Turkey is always ready to contribute to efforts aimed at the protection of peace and stability. Cooperation between Turkey and Serbia, the key countries in the region, will be the strongest foundation of the stability and well-being of the region, Erdogan stated. The Turkish president stated that he was honored to be one of the first presidents to visit Serbia since Vucic took office. I was particularly moved by the reception which we enjoyed during the visit to the region of Sandzak, together with Your Excellency, which represents the bridge of friendship between our countries. We are encouraging the prominent business people from Turkey, who accompanied me on the visit, to invest in Sandzak. I am convinced that they had taken concrete steps in that field, at meetings they had with their partners, the letter reads. Erdogan stated that the signing of the joint declaration about the founding of the High Council for cooperation, represented a declaration of the will to promote bilateral relations.

STEFANOVIC, DITTMANN DISCUSS POLICE COOPERATION AGAINST ILLEGAL MIGRATION

BELGRADE, 9 November 2017 (Beta) - Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic had talks in Belgrade, on Nov. 9 with German Ambassador Axel Dittmann about the strengthening of the two countries' police cooperation in preventing irregular migration and organized crime. Stefanovic and Dittmann discussed concrete measures for preventing irregular migration, stated the Serbian Interior Ministry. Stefanovic stressed that, since the start of the migrant crisis, Serbia had been open and ready to be a part of the joint solution with the European Union and the member states, the statement reads. He pointed out that cooperation between the police of Serbia and Germany was at an exceptional level and that they exchanged more than 2,400 information notes since the beginning of the year within operative cooperation. During the meeting, they also discussed the aid the German Interior Ministry would send to Serbia with the aim of strengthening police capacities.

STEFANOVIC, CHINESE AMBASSADOR ON SECURITY COOPERATION

BELGRADE, 9 November 2017 (Beta) - Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic met in Belgrade, on Nov. 9 with Chinese Ambassador Li Manchang and discussed continuing cooperation between the two countries in the area of security. Stefanovic and Li discussed the possibility of organizing training and experience exchanges between experts in both countries in the area of fighting organized crime, terrorism, high-technology crime and other forms of crime, the ministry said in a statement. The statement said that Li congratulated Stefanovic on his appointment as secretary of the National Security Council. Stefanovic was appointed secretary by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Nov. 7. Stefanovic's appointment also makes him chief of the Bureau for Coordinating the Operation of Security Services.

DJORDJEVIC, SCOTT ON COOPERATION BETWEEN SERBIA, U.S. IN AREA OF MIGRATION

BELGRADE, 9 November 2017 (Beta) - Serbian Minister of Labor, Employment, Veterans' and Social Issues Zoran Djordjevic met on Nov. 9 with U.S. Ambassador Kyle Scott and discussed relations between the two countries and the question of migration and fighting human trafficking. A statement said that Minister Djordjevic described cooperation between Serbia and the U.S. as good and friendly, adding that they needed to be fortified in areas such as labor, employment, social and other issues like migration and human trafficking. Djordjevic asked for assistance and support for institutionalizing the question of tackling bullying among children and youth and that it was exceptionally important to adopt the good practices of countries that had a developed democratic system. Ambassador Scott said that he agreed that the question of migration was very important and expressed his pleasure with the progress in finding solutions to migrant issues in Serbia. He said that he was encouraged by the ministry's stance to focus on unaccompanied minor migrants and announced that the U.S. would continue supporting Serbian government institutions in that area. He stressed that Serbia's progress in fighting human trafficking was visible and that he would personally recommend that more depth in a report on Serbia's progress in that area.

SWISS AMBASSADOR, ZORANA MIHAJLOVIC MEET: SUPPORT FOR GENDER EQUALITY IN SERBIA

BELGRADE, 9 November 2017 (Beta) - Swiss Ambassador to Serbia Philippe Guex said during a talk with Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlovic on Nov. 9 that Switzerland continued to support Serbia's efforts to improve gender equality. The new Swiss Strategy of Cooperating with Serbia, worth EUR90 million, will focus exactly on gender equality. Our objective is that gender equality be contained in all three pillars of the strategy - management, economic development and energy efficiency, Guex said. According to the Serbian deputy prime minister's office, Guex lauded Serbia's results in the area of gender equality. Zorana Mihajlovic said that all projects in the area of gender equality and social inclusion being realized in association with the Swiss government were very important for Serbia's citizens. "Serbia is a leader in the region in achievements in these areas, which has been recognized by the EU, to whose ranks we aspire," Mihajlovic said, who is president of the Coordinating Body for Gender Equality. Ambassador Guex voiced his satisfaction with cooperation so far, especially through projects of social inclusion and poverty reduction.

ANTIC: CHINA WILL SUPPORT HAVING CHINA PLUS 16 MEETING ON ENERGY IN SERBIA

BELGRADE, 9 November 2017 (Beta) - Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Aleksandar Antic said in Bucharest, on Nov. 9 that he had received the Chinese energy minister's assurances that the country would support an idea for holding the next China Plus 16 meeting of ministers in the area of energy in Serbia. "I think that that will be an excellent opportunity for Serbia, for businesses, public enterprises, everyone dealing in energy both from China and all of the countries in the region and that this cooperation could bring great benefits to all of our countries," Antic told reporters. He added that he hoped that China's support would contribute to the gathering being held in Belgrade in 2018 or 2019 at the latest, and that it would mean a lot for it to be held alongside a "serious business" forum. Antic attended the Council of Ministers of the China Plus 16 mechanism in Bucharest. He said that during his stay in the city he met with a large number of representatives of energy companies from China, Romania and the region, the most important of which he said was a meeting with the vice president of Power China.
