USEFUL INFORMATION
HEALTH SITUATION – Among tropical diseases, malaria is the most common; therefore, the use of mosquito-repellent products (Autan Tropical, etc.) is recommended. Yellow fever, dengue fever, and the Zika virus are also present in Gabon. It is recommended to have travel health insurance as well as a certain amount of money to cover potential hospital expenses. The capacity of local hospitals, especially in smaller towns, is limited. As nearly 4% of the adult population is infected with HIV, it is recommended to take standard precautionary measures to avoid exposure. Wearing clothing that covers the body (long pants and long-sleeved shirts) is advised. Food is considered safe only in hotels or better restaurants. Bottled water should always be used.
SECURITY SITUATION – In Libreville and other cities, security is generally good, but the risk of robberies, armed attacks, and harassment should not be ruled out. It is recommended to avoid the outskirts of the city, especially in the evening hours, and not to carry large amounts of cash or jewelry while moving around the city. Car windows and doors should remain closed while driving.
TRANSPORT – There is no organized public transport in Libreville, and the use of minibuses, vans, and motorcycle taxis commonly used by the local population is not recommended. Taxi services may be used (it is recommended to order them through the hotel reception, agree on the fare in advance, and use only clearly marked taxis). During a tourist stay in Gabon, you may drive a motor vehicle only with an international driving permit.
OTHER – The local currency is the Central African Franc (XAF). Cash withdrawals from ATMs and payments by credit/debit cards are possible in hotels, better restaurants, and shops. It is recommended to carry a certain amount of cash in case cards cannot be used. Foreign currencies (most commonly EUR and USD) can be exchanged at the airport, in banks, or in hotels. Since it is a regional currency, the exchange rate is fixed.
