Pavić: Serbian citizens are fine, we are working on their evacuation

16. Aug 2021.
Siniša Pavić, the charge d'affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in India, which is also in charge of Afghanistan on a non-residential basis, said today that three Serbian citizens in Afghanistan are well and that their evacuation is underway, but that no one can say when the flights will be possible.

"We are in permanent contact with three of our citizens who are registered as persons whose evacuation we are working on. Above all, they are healthy", Pavić told Tanjug television.

He reiterated that the Embassy is in constant contact with them and that efforts for their evacuation are continuing.

The results of that procedure depend on two things, first, as Pavić stated, on the readiness of Serbia's international partners to help.

"We have made a significant step forward during the day and we have appropriate promises that it will be done in the best way possible. The first element is present, which is the expressed readiness to do it. We have appropriate agreements in that regard, and that is also known to our citizens", said the charge d'affaires.

The second moment, says Pavić, is the actual possibility of evacuation flights.

"The situation in the last few hours has gone in a negative direction. No one can say with certainty at what point the flights will be possible", Pavić pointed out.

Also, the charge d'affaires said that at this moment, a large number, from 5,000 to 6,000 people, are on the airport runway, and in such a situation, there are no conditions for safe flights.

"At this moment, no one can say with certainty at what moment it will be possible to organize flights from the airport", he said.

He points out that the situation at the airport does not suit anyone, but also that the control and the possibility of deciding on the dynamics of events are great unknowns.

According to him, out of a total of three citizens of Serbia, we have a situation where two are together at the same location, and one citizen is separated.
