Đurić: Serbia sees Africa as a strategic partner for cooperation

28. Jul 2025.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Marko Đurić, expressed great satisfaction today in Cotonou that his visit to the Republic of Benin marks the first official visit by a Serbian Foreign Minister to this friendly country. He emphasized Serbia’s strong commitment to deepening partnerships with African states and strengthening its presence in West Africa.

Minister Đurić underlined that Serbia regards cooperation with African nations as one of its key development opportunities, especially considering the continent’s current and future position as the fastest-growing region in terms of both economy and population. Those who secure a presence in Africa in time, Đurić noted, will also secure the best partnerships for their scientists, industries, and institutions.

He stressed that Serbia aspires to be a reliable and equal partner that does not impose political conditions, recalling the decades-long tradition of friendship dating back to the era of President Tito and the Non-Aligned Movement.

Đurić highlighted that under the leadership of President Aleksandar Vučić, Serbia sees Africa as a region where it can realize comparative advantages over other European countries and contribute to faster economic development. He also noted that Belgrade looks to Benin for support on issues of vital national interest, particularly with regard to Kosovo and Metohija—one of the central topics to be discussed with his hosts.

The Minister expressed hope that the Republic of Benin will be among the 130 participating countries at EXPO 2027, to be held in Belgrade, recalling that Benin’s delegation had already attended the preparatory meeting in the Serbian capital. He emphasized that Benin’s participation would be of exceptional value, given its rich cultural and historical heritage, symbolized by the courage and valor of the region’s legendary “Amazon warriors.”

Minister Đurić reaffirmed that Serbia continues to uphold a policy of anti-colonialism and pursues a multi-vector foreign policy—developing relations with African countries based on equality and mutual respect, just as it does with its partners in Europe and across the globe.

He concluded by noting that, together with the Serbian delegation, he had held a series of meaningful meetings with the Ministers of Defence, Culture, and Tourism, with further talks planned with the Minister of Sport, representatives of the Parliament, the highest state leadership, and political consultations at the level of Foreign Ministers.
