Đurić: Shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between Serbia and Botswana
Minister Đurić underlined that the meeting represents both a confirmation of the strong ties between the two countries and a new impetus for expanding overall cooperation, in line with Serbia’s efforts to deepen its political, economic, cultural, and educational relations with African partners.
He recalled that Serbia, then as part of the former Yugoslavia, had a notable presence in Botswana, evidenced by the construction of important facilities in Gaborone and the existence of the Church of Saint Sava, which stands as a permanent reminder of the community that once lived there.
Minister Đurić conveyed Serbia’s particular gratitude for Botswana’s support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, noting that he had briefed Minister Butale on the current situation in Kosovo and Metohija.
According to him, Serbia and Botswana share an understanding of the importance of respecting international law as a fundamental principle of global stability.
He highlighted the significant potential for advancing cooperation, particularly in the field of agriculture, where Serbia can offer seed exports, machinery, and knowledge transfer related to modern farming technologies. He also identified the information and communication technology sector as an area of priority cooperation—especially regarding digital services, data management, digital skills, and infrastructure development.
Speaking about educational cooperation, Minister Đurić recalled that Serbia is proud of the “World in Serbia” scholarship program, through which students from over 120 countries study in our country. He emphasized Serbia’s readiness to further increase the number of scholarships available to students from Botswana, expressing confidence that they would become an enduring bridge between the two nations.
The Minister of International Affairs of the Republic of Botswana, Dr. Phenyo Butale, reflected on the rich history and close relations between the two countries, stressing their shared commitment to upholding international law and the principle of territorial integrity.
Minister Butale invited Serbian companies to invest in Botswana, noting that the country is undergoing transformation and industrialization, with considerable untapped potential in agriculture, rare minerals, and digitalization. He also conveyed Botswana’s interest in enhancing cooperation in education, science, and technology. Minister Butale expressed his expectation that closer ties between the peoples of Serbia and Botswana—particularly through scholarship and exchange programs—will contribute to strengthening the partnership and cooperation between the two countries.
The Serbian Foreign Minister expressed confidence that Botswana will be among the participants of Expo 2027, recalling that more than 130 countries have already confirmed their attendance. He also noted that, during their visit, the delegation will have the opportunity to learn more about the development of Serbia’s wine industry, as the major European wine festival “Wine Vision” is being formally opened in Belgrade.
Minister Đurić expressed his confidence that the guests from Botswana will experience Serbia as a friendly and welcoming country and that their visit will further strengthen the cooperation between the two nations.
