Political relations
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Serbia and Canada were established on 30 May 1941. Bilateral relations encompass political dialogue, parliamentary cooperation and economic ties, with opportunities for further advancement in areas of mutual interest.
Bilateral relations have slightly improved in recent years, especially in the field of economic cooperation and investments, and political dialogue, as well, has been revitalized.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs J. Baird visited Belgrade in 2014. This was, the first visit of the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs after 13 years.
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs I. Dačić visited Canada in 2016 (the first visit of a Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs after 14 years).
Bilateral Political Consultations were held in Ottawa on 3 and 4 October 2023.
At the initiative of Nenad Kuruć, a Member of Parliament from the Conservative Party, the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Republic of Serbia was established on 17 November 2025.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Marko Đurić paid an official visit to Canada in May 2026. The visit took place in the year marking the 85th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and represented the first visit by a Serbian Foreign Minister to Canada in ten years.
An official visit by members of the Canadian Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Republic of Serbia to the Parliament of Canada took place in August 2026.
Economic relations
According to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, total merchandise trade between the Republic of Serbia and Canada amounted to EUR 108.3 million in 2025. Serbian exports to Canada amounted to EUR 62.1 million, while imports from Canada amounted to EUR 46.2 million.
An important step towards strengthening economic ties was the Serbia–Canada Business Forum, held in Toronto on 26 May 2026 and organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Canada, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, with the support of Air Serbia. The Forum brought together 28 companies from Serbia and more than 40 Canadian companies and organisations.
The resumption of the direct Belgrade–Toronto air route on 23 May 2026, after more than three decades, represents a significant step towards strengthening connectivity between the two countries.
Bilateral agreements
The following bilateral agreements have been concluded between the Republic of Serbia and Canada:
- Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and Canada for the Avoidance of Double Taxation with Respect to Taxes on Income and on Capital — signed on 27 April 2012 (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia – International Treaties, No. 6/12).
- Agreement on Social Security between the Republic of Serbia and Canada, together with the Administrative Agreement for its implementation — signed on 12 April 2013 (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia – International Treaties, No. 12/13).
- Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and Canada for the Promotion and Protection of Investments — signed on 1 September 2014 (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia – International Treaties, No. 8/15).
- Air Transport Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of Canada — signed on 21 May 2018.
- Agreement on Social Security between the Republic of Serbia and Québec, together with the Administrative Agreement and the Protocol on its implementation — signed on 19 June 2020 and ratified on 6 May 2021.
