Political relations

Bilateral relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic are traditionally good and friendly. Intensified political contacts took place between 1974 and 1979. The relations between the two countries were characterized by close positions and cooperation based on the principles of non-alignment, as well as political, diplomatic and material support of the former Yugoslavia to the struggle of Laos for national liberation. Laos supported our country during the crisis in the former SFRY in the 1990s and expressed strong opposition to NATO aggression against the FRY in 1999. The then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, I. Mrkić visited Laos on 22 – 25 February 2013. Delegation of the National Assembly of Laos, led by President P. Yathotou, visited the Republic of Serbia in October 2013. Тhe then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lao People’s Democratic Republic Thongloun Sisoulith visited Republic of Serbia  on 29-30 May 2013. Тhe Laotian delegation at the  High level Commemorative meeting to mark the 60th anniversary of the Non -Aligned Movement on 11-12. October 2021 in Belgrade, led by Ambassador of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to the Republic of Serbia  Sithong Chitnhothinh.

 

Economic relations

There is a potential for improving economic cooperation between the Republic of Serbia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. During 2022, exports from Laos amounted to 3.18 million USD (3.07 million euros), and imports 636,000 USD. (615,000 euros).

 

Bilateral agreements

  • Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Laos on cooperation in the field of culture and education, signed on 29 May 2013, published in The Official Gazette, International Treaties No.12/2013 from 31 October 2013.
  • Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Laos on the abolition of visas for holders of diplomatic and official passports, signed on 29 May 2013, published in The Official Gazette, International Treaties No.5/14.
