Ambassador Đurić: The letter from the congressmen represents great recognition for Serbia

16. Feb 2022.
Serbian Ambassador to Washington Marko Đurić assessed that the recent letter from 16 members of the American Congress to President Joe Biden represented a great recognition Serbia had achieved in the past few years.

Ambassador Đurić reminded that the letter mentioned Serbian success in the field of economy as well as the Serbian initiative launched by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić together with several other regional leaders with regards to the creation of the Open Balkan Initiative, i.e., free-trade zones, free flow of people, capital, and services.

"That speaks of a new paradigm of Serbian politics," Ambassador Đurić said in an interview with the Serbian Diaspora Television (TSD). He pointed out that the congressmen's letter was the result of Serbia's new approach to institutions in Washington and the new structure of Serbian activities in America, as well as the hundreds of meetings and talks held with U.S. officials, congressmen, and their staff.

Ambassador Đurić announced that the Serbian Embassy in the United States would continue to work with the executive branch, the Congress and the legislative branch, and that the team tasked with cooperation with the Serbian diaspora, which encompasses consulates general and the core team in Washington, would continue to visit Serbian communities intensively across the United States.

"Together with the dioceses of our church, which are deeply rooted here and enjoy the most serious forms of cooperation with the Serbian diaspora, I think we are on the path to making a long-term and new position for Serbia. This will take a lot of patience, a lot of effort, a lot of perseverance." Ambassador Đurić also called on TSD viewers to actively work with their political representatives in America and to be in constant communication with them. "Only in this way can we manage to do something," he said.

Ambassador Đurić extended his congratulations to the TSD viewers on the occasion of the Statehood Day and pointed out that Serbia had not achieved little in more than 200 years of its renewed statehood. "When Duke Karađorđe and his insurgents started the second anti-feudal revolution in Europe back in 1804 after the French Revolution, which made the Serbs one of the leading nations in the world, we practically started rebuilding the country from scratch. Today, when Belgrade is one of the largest metropolises in Southeast Europe, the largest city between Vienna and Istanbul, when 10 modern motorways are being built, when Serbian scientists are participating in leading global projects in various fields, from biotechnology to medicine to the most state-of-the-art digital IT industries, we can proudly say that Serbia has come a long way", he pointed out.

Ambassador Đurić noted that "we have a long way to go", that our country was still being built and that we should take such a stance. "Everyone should give their contribution. Long live Serbia, and I wish you all a happy holiday," he concluded.
