As a part of projects commemorating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Baku, in collaboration with the management of the historical and architectural complex Iceri Seher (Old Town), organised a photography exhibition titled “Monasteries – cultural, historical and spiritual heritage of the Serbian people”.

In his opening speech, Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Republic of Azerbaijan Dragan Vladisavljević emphasised that its purpose was to bring the two nations closer and let them get to know each other better, presenting the world of Serbian medieval monasteries and fresco paintings, as a part of the Serbian cultural and historical heritage, to the Azerbaijani audiences.

Ambassador Vladisavljević stated that many of these beautiful buildings were under the protection of UNESCO, and listed among the world’s great works of art.

He thanked the photographers from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments Belgrade of Serbia, the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church, whose photographs made the exhibition possible.

Guests were addressed by the Chairman of the national historical and architectural complex Iceri Seher Sahand Seyedzadeh, who spoke about the importance of the exhibition for the continuation and improvement of the cultural cooperation between the two countries. He expressed his hope that the cooperation between the museum complex Iceri Seher and the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Baku would reinforce the traditional friendly relations between Serbia and Azerbaijan.

Over 50 photographs of the most important Serbian monasteries were displayed, sorted into three well-known medieval schools of architecture, together with some of the many fresco paintings which decorate these buildings, and which are among the most beautiful works of art of their time.
