The Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the USA, Marko Đurić, became the first Ambassador of Serbia in Antigua and Barbuda today, based in Washington.

At a ceremony held at the governor's residence in St. John's, Ambassador Đurić presented his credentials to Governor-General Rodney Williams, thus officially taking over the duty of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Serbia to this Caribbean state on a non-residential basis.

"Today we wrote diplomatic history because we accredited an ambassador of Serbia in Antigua and Barbuda for the first time. Although our diplomatic relations were formally established only in 2018, I talked with the highest officials about specific modalities of cooperation between our countries and peoples", said Đurić.

The basis of our bilateral cooperation so far is the "World in Serbia" program, through which we have enabled young people from Antigua and Barbuda to study for free in our country, said Đurić, adding that in the coming period more scholarships will be awarded as a sign of friendship with the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

During the visit, Đurić had separate meetings with the Acting Prime Minister Steadroy Benjamin and the Minister of Foreign Affairs E.P. Chet Greene, to whom he conveyed personal gratitude of Minister Nikola Selaković for participating in the recent commemorative meeting on the occasion of marking the 60th anniversary of the first Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Belgrade.

Referring to the Memorandum of Friendship and Cooperation, signed by Ministers Selaković and Greene in October, Đurić assessed that the document represents an excellent platform for further joint action of the two ministries in terms of achieving mutual interests.

Economies and health were mentioned in the talks as an important segment of Serbia's cooperation with Antigua and Barbuda, and the plan for a joint fight against the COVID-19 pandemic was especially discussed.
