Kozarev: Türk Should Remain Impartial and Avoid the Pitfalls of Being Drawn into the Day-to-Day Politics of Member States

The Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dušan Kozarev, reacting to a recent statement by Volker Türk, emphasized that it is unbecoming of diplomacy at that level to align itself with marginal opposition commentators in Serbia and to take part in their electoral campaign.

“The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, should, in accordance with his function—particularly bearing in mind the traditionally neutral and conciliatory character of the United Nations—remain impartial and avoid the pitfalls of being drawn into the day-to-day politics of member states.

In this regard, it is especially striking that he frequently positions himself publicly along the lines of the so-called ‘woke’ global agenda, which is, as a rule, directed against genuinely popular and freedom-oriented states and their leaders.

It is not befitting of diplomacy at that level to side with marginal opposition commentators in Serbia and to participate in their electoral campaign based on unfounded claims and evident falsehoods, let alone to advocate any global ideological currents.

This is all the more so given that, in Serbia—whether consciously or unconsciously, though one would hope the latter—he is thereby contributing to the ‘pumping up’ of a long-deflated tire of a falsely democratic, and fundamentally exclusionary and extremist, obstructionist bicycle.

Ultimately, it can only be an honor for Serbia and President Vučić to find themselves in the Euro-Mediterranean and North Atlantic company that is often targeted by such political approaches, from Israel, through Hungary and Slovakia, all the way to the United States,” Kozarev stated.
