UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution "International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development 2024-2033"

25. Aug 2023.
As part of the ongoing 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on Friday, 25 August 2023, the General Assembly, at the proposal of the Republic of Serbia, adopted by consensus the UN General Assembly Resolution "International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development 2024-2033".

This is the first thematic resolution initiated and submitted by the Republic of Serbia in the UN General Assembly in order to encourage the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was agreed and adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.

The significance of the adoption of this resolution, which was widely supported by the co-sponsor countries from different parts of the world, is manifold: - the importance of science as one of the main prerequisites and an engine of sustainable development as a whole has been recognized; - at the same time, it is one of the priorities of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in addition to general health, food safety, climate change, etc., by submitting this resolution, the Republic of Serbia reaffirmed not only that it has made a political commitment to work towards achieving common goals for the common good but that it is also truly committed to this issue and is actively working on its realization; - at a time when the world is simultaneously facing multiple crises with no agreement at the global level on how they can/should be resolved, the adoption of this resolution in the UN General Assembly is a confirmation that, when the interests are of general importance,  an individual initiative, in this case of Serbia, is easily recognized and widely supported.
