The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Marko Đurić, met today with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to discuss cooperation and the advancement of human rights at both the national and international levels.

Minister Đurić reaffirmed Serbia’s firm commitment to upholding international standards and engaging in multilateral cooperation in the field of human rights, emphasizing the essential role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in fostering dialogue and coordinating with international partners.

He underlined that the Republic of Serbia respects, protects, and promotes human rights in accordance with the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and other relevant international instruments. He added that Serbia has ratified most of the core UN human rights treaties and actively participates in the work of UN bodies and mechanisms, with particular attention devoted to the UN Human Rights Council.

Both parties agreed on the need to intensify cooperation in areas of mutual interest, with a special focus on the exchange of experiences and the implementation of best practices.

Minister Đurić expressed readiness for continued constructive dialogue with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, confident that such cooperation would contribute to further strengthening Serbia’s international standing and improving the protection of human rights.

Regarding the current situation in Serbia, Minister Đurić emphasized that the new Government, led by Professor Dr. Đuro Macut, has demonstrated political responsibility and a commitment to dialogue and de-escalation of societal tensions.

He voiced grave concern over the ongoing violations of the rights of Serbs and other non-Albanian communities in Kosovo and Metohija, including restrictions on freedom of expression, raids on Serbian institutions, arbitrary detentions, unfounded judicial proceedings, and the destruction of Serbian cultural heritage.

Minister Đurić highlighted the importance of an international response to ensure the full protection and security of the Serbian population and to prevent persecution by the provisional self-government institutions in Priština.
