Đurić Opens the Exhibition “On the Paths of Roman Emperors” in Trieste
Minister Đurić noted that the exhibition, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia in cooperation with the Archaeological Institute of Serbia and the City of Trieste, bears witness to the rich Roman heritage on the territory of Serbia and its importance for Europe’s cultural legacy.
He underlined that Serbia today can proudly point to numerous monuments from the Roman period on its territory, as well as to the profound influence of Roman law on the Serbian legal system, evident in historical documents such as the Nomocanon and Dušan’s Code.
Recalling the significance of marking 1,700 years since the Edict of Milan, which enabled freedom of religion and provided a strong impetus for the development of the Roman Empire, Đurić observed that such historical milestones continue to carry exceptional civilizational value.
Addressing contemporary cooperation with Italy, he assessed that relations between the two countries are exceptionally strong, expressing confidence that their further development will continue across all fields.
He also pointed out that Trieste holds a special place in the history of the Serbian people as a former gateway to the Western world, and that it continues to serve as an important hub for future joint initiatives.
Particular emphasis was placed on the Serbian community in Italy, which represents a strong bridge between the two countries and an important potential for further connectivity.
“Imperial authority should not rely solely on arms, but also on the rule of law,” Đurić stated, quoting a Latin maxim with which he concluded his address.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, the Serbian Orthodox Church, the City of Trieste, Italian cultural institutions, as well as members of the Serbian community in Trieste. The Consul of Serbia in Trieste, Nemanja Sekićki, also addressed those present.
At the opening, the Mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza, delivered remarks and presented the Minister with the Plaque of the City of Trieste.
The exhibition “On the Paths of Roman Emperors” at the Sartorio Civic Museum will be open to visitors over the next two months.
