Đurić: The Rule of Law cannot be established by violating the law
“I strongly condemn the violence conducted by a part of the demonstrators in Novi Sad last night. Some of those gathered resorted to methods of political struggle that are completely unacceptable in a democratic society,” Minister Đurić stated.
He emphasized that the rule of law cannot be supported or established through violations of the law, nor can a legal state be strengthened by attacks on members of the police.
“It is especially important to individualize responsibility—to determine who the organizers and perpetrators of the violence are. Equally important is that the judiciary act impartially and in accordance with the law in prosecuting those who attacked officials, public property, or in any way endangered the safety of people and property,” the Minister underlined.
“It is wholly inappropriate for foreign officials and politicians to be present at and take part in anti-government gatherings in our country at such a political moment. This presence appears to serve only the purpose of fueling tensions. I particularly wish to emphasize that scenes of unrest, attacks on the police, and clashes in the streets damage the reputation of our country, negatively affect economic flows, and produce harmful consequences for all citizens, regardless of their political orientation,” concluded Minister Marko Đurić.
