Friendly relations with Syria dating back to the time of SFRY and Non-Allied Movement

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Nikola Selaković, has discussed in New York today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria Faisal Mekdad.

Selaković pointed out that Serbia considered Syria a friendly country and their relations dated back from the time of SFRY and Non-Allied Movement.

With regards to this, the Minister expressed his pleasure because Syrian delegation led by Minister Mekdad would attend the event in Belgrade to celebrate an important jubilee – the 60th anniversary of the First conference of the Non-Allied Movement.

The Minister said that Serbia was committed to strengthening of the political dialog with Syria, expressed hope that Syria would manage to recover from the consequences of tragic ten-year events in its country.

Moreover, Selaković expressed the readiness to improve economic cooperation and trade exchange upon the stabilization of the situation in Syria.

Selaković especially thanked for the solid and principled attitude of Syria on the non-recognition of unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo and advocacy for the observance of the international law. Furthermore, the Serbian Foreign Minister thanked for the support Syria provides to our territorial integrity and sovereignty in international organizations.
