The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Nikola Selaković, attended the solemn session of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Congress of Guatemala today, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the independence of the countries of the Central American region.

Addressing the present deputies and representatives of the diplomatic corps in Guatemala, the head of Serbian diplomacy, on behalf of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, the Government and the citizens of Serbia, congratulated the Central American countries on this important jubilee.

"Despite the great geographical distance of our nations, I am proud to be with you to present Serbia as a country that shares values with the countries of Central America. Our nations are freedom-loving, we share the same values, and we are proud of our friendship with Central American countries", Selaković said.

According to him, Serbia is determined to strengthen cooperation with all countries in this part of the world and within regional organizations, emphasizing the gratitude of our country for its observer status in the Central American Integration System (SICA).

Speaking about the importance of regional organization, Selaković emphasized Serbia's commitment to such connections, and presented the "Open Balkans" initiative.

As he pointed out, Serbia is a leader in regional initiatives in the Western Balkans and Southeast Europe, which is confirmed by the "Open Balkans" initiative launched by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and supported by the prime ministers of Northern Macedonia and Albania.

As he explained, that initiative is based on the free flow of people, goods, capital and services, and one of its most important values is solidarity.

"We are on the way to establishing a joint organization that will help each of the countries in case of natural disasters. Our solidarity was also proven during the Covid pandemic", Selaković said, adding that Serbia used what it managed to create through reforms to support friendly countries in the region and around the world, donating 1.1 million doses of vaccines so far.

"You should know that there is one European country that shares your values and that fights for a more humane, just and solidary world. Long live our friendship and independence and the freedom of the fraternal countries of Central America", Selaković said.
