Selaković: Serbia is committed to meeting the goals of sustainable development and protection of the environment

Today, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selaković met with Bruno Pozzi, Director of the Europe Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), based in Geneva.

Minister Selaković said that UNEP was an important international partner in the field of environmental protection, emphasising that Serbia expected intensification of cooperation with the UNEP Secretariat, as well as the offices in Geneva and Vienna.

Minister Selaković also said that Serbia believed there was room for further cooperation with UNEP through the UNEP Strategy for 2022–2025, which has announced continuous assistance to UN member states in dealing with environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution and loss of biological diversity.

The Minister pointed out that Serbia was committed to achieving the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda and sustainable development goals, and in that regard he pointed out that Serbia adopted the Law on Climate Change in 2021, and was focused on implementing sustainable development goals and multilateral agreements, green growth and the circular economy.

According to Minister Selaković, the goal is to create conditions for job creation, energy diversification and combating climate change through green policy.

Minister Selaković underlined that the opening of Cluster 4 in the accession negotiations with the EU, relating to the green agenda and sustainable connectivity, is a clear signal that Serbia has made significant progress in this area in the previous period.

Selaković acquainted his interlocutor with the reforms and projects that Serbia has implemented in the previous period, as well as with the plans for future investments in the field of environmental protection as part of the “Clean Serbia” project.
