Statements from Montenegro do not contribute to regional stability

12. Jun 2025.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia expresses its deep concern regarding recent statements coming from Montenegro, particularly in the context of support for the independence of the so-called Kosovo and active lobbying for Priština’s membership in international organizations—actions that are contrary to international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the principles of good neighbourly relations.

While Serbia does not interfere in the foreign policy priorities of any other sovereign state, we firmly believe that such priorities should not be directed against the vital interests of other states and peoples. This is especially concerning when such actions come from neighbouring countries. Statements of this nature undoubtedly further exacerbate regional tensions and do not contribute to stability in this part of the Balkans.

Serbia remains firmly committed to the preservation of peace and stability, and continues to believe that dialogue is the only viable path toward resolving outstanding issues. We call on all our neighbours, including Montenegro, to refrain from statements and actions that may escalate tensions, and instead work towards building mutual trust and cooperation.

Given the historical and cultural ties that bind Serbia to the region, we believe it is essential to nurture and preserve positive relations, rather than support anti-Serbian actions, further divisions, and conflict. We sincerely hope that all political actors in the region will act responsibly and focus their efforts on building a stable and secure future for all the citizens of the Balkans.
