Strong and continuous support of Serbia and Cyprus for preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Nikola Selaković, met today with the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetrios Theophylactou.

The conversation confirmed that the bilateral relations between the two countries are based on strong friendship, mutual solidarity and strict respect for international law, and the interlocutors expressed unequivocal and uninterrupted support for preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries.

Minister Selaković provided strong support to the negotiating efforts of the Republic of Cyprus, which are aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem, while preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Cyprus.

Selaković pointed out that Serbia is following the recent development of the situation in the area of ​​the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus with great concern.

"The Republic of Serbia, supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus, believes that all activities in the area of ​​the town of Varosha can be carried out only with the consent of the Cypriot authorities and with respect for international law and UN Security Council resolutions 550 and 789", said Minister Selaković.

The head of Serbian diplomacy pointed out that Serbia expresses expectation that other important regional factors will act in accordance with the basic principles of international law, in order to avoid the growth of tensions and the worsening of the security situation in the region.

"The Republic of Serbia and the citizens of the Republic of Serbia, faced with their problems and the need to defend their own national interests, consider dialogue as the only possible mechanism for peaceful settlement of disputes and point to the need to refrain from all forms of unilateral activities that directly jeopardize dialogue and the possibility of reaching a solution", Selaković emphasized.
