The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Marko Đurić, met today with the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Acting Head of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), Mr. Milbert Dongjoon Shin.

Minister Đurić emphasized that the United Nations remains the most important international organization in safeguarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia, underlining that Serbia attaches immense importance to the work and mandate of the Organization.

He stressed the need for the Mission to continue fully implementing its mandate in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which represents the fundamental legal framework for maintaining peace and stability in Serbia’s southern province.

With regard to the forthcoming UN Security Council session dedicated to UNMIK’s activities, Minister Đurić highlighted that it is of particular importance for Serbia to preserve the continuity and open format of these sessions, ensuring that the international community is objectively informed about the situation on the ground and the challenges faced by the Serbian population in Kosovo and Metohija.

Minister Đurić provided a detailed briefing on the current situation in the province, pointing to the growing pressure on the Serbian community and the systematic persecution of Serbs. He stressed that the continued attacks and measures targeting the healthcare, education, and judicial systems in northern Kosovo and Metohija, as well as the absence of political will in Pristina to fulfill its obligations under the Brussels Agreement, clearly demonstrate a deliberate political message and intention to further aggravate the living conditions of the Serbian people.

He also recalled that, twelve years after the agreement was reached, the Community of Serb-Majority Municipalities has still not been established, and that officials in Priština have repeatedly and publicly stated that they do not intend to do so — representing a serious violation of the commitments undertaken in the Brussels Agreement.

Minister Đurić underlined that the upcoming local elections, scheduled for 12 October, are of crucial importance for the survival of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, emphasizing that participation in the elections presents an opportunity for the Serbs in the north of the province to regain institutional control in the Serb-majority municipalities.

He assessed that the presence of the UN Mission remains essential for the preservation of peace, stability, and the protection of fundamental human rights, and that it is necessary for the United Nations to respond decisively to the numerous incidents, provocations, and unilateral actions undertaken by the provisional institutions of self-government in Priština.
